Description

A perennial herb also known by several regional names. In folk belief, its Bulgarian name is associated with nine powers. Use the leaves, rhizome and fruit to season salads, chicken soup, beans, meat and fish dishes. The rhizome and fruit are described as antiseptic, while dried leaves retain their culinary qualities for a long time.
Benefits: The source states that the rhizome contains up to 1% essential oil and also lists resins, furanocoumarins, lecithin, sugars, organic acids, enzymes and tannins. The roots contain essential oils, sugars, minerals, organic acids, resins, coumarin, pectin and starch.
Traditional medicinal uses: The source describes stimulation of digestive and respiratory secretions, toning, support for the excretory, cardiovascular and nervous systems, an antispasmodic effect, relief of menstrual pain, action against the bacterium causing tuberculosis, and use for skin conditions and as a diuretic.
